Dr. Philip A. Stayer is currently a private poultry veterinary consultant since June 1, 2023. He was previously employed by Wayne Sanderson Farms (WSF) in continuation of his service as Sanderson Farms’ Corporate Veterinarian for over 20 years. In October 2001, when Dr. Stayer started at Sanderson Farms, he was the sole veterinarian for live production overseeing five grow-out divisions in two states. By the time Sanderson Farms was sold in July 2022, Dr. Stayer oversaw three other board-certified veterinarians working with 11 divisions in four states. Dr. Stayer also worked as a Technical Service Veterinarian for Elanco Animal Health from December 1994 until October 2001, and the Production Veterinarian for Arbor Acres from 1991 through most of 1994.  

He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University (B.S.) 1986, the University of Tennessee (D.V.M.) 1989 and Mississippi State University (M.S.) 1991. His M.S. thesis, entitled “Studies of Coccidiostat Use in Broilers,” encompassed 150 pages covering two studies: one, comparing anticoccidial sensitivity testing in battery cages to floor pen models and actual live production, and the second, relative oocyst populations during conventional broiler grow-out in the presence of in-feed anticoccidial compounds. He has been certified as a diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV) since 1994.  

In addition to overseeing WSF bird health with the assistance of five other ACPV certified veterinarians, Dr. Stayer was active in several professional associations including NPIP, ACPV, AAAP (part of AVMA), NCC, International Poultry Council, US Poultry & Egg Association, Mississippi Poultry Association and Mississippi Board of Animal Health. Dr. Stayer worked on Secure Broiler Supply and 2022 NCC Poultry Welfare Audit update. He has been one of the Core Committee broiler representatives for the AAAP Animal Welfare Committee from 2010 until 2023.  

He serves as adjunct faculty at Mississippi State University, CVM, and North Carolina State University, CVM, as well as affiliated faculty at Auburn University, CVM, lecturing and hosting field trips. During his tenure at Sanderson Farms, he mentored over 30 students, from undergraduates to post-DVM’s, from a variety of institutions, states and countries. To date, he has contributed to over 200 articles in scientific and industry meetings or publications.
